The beard is a symbol for youthfulness, creativity, and a certain type of rugged manliness. It makes you feel two inches taller, and 10 pounds burlier. But the hardest part is the uncomfortable in-between transformation. From the awkward, itchy, patchy stage - to not recognizing yourself in the mirror - to dealing with your friends not-so-subtly mentioning that it might not be the greatest look.
Here's the deal: If you have a beard, you should definitely be maintaining it the correct way. Most men don’t believe they need to use any products at all. But men should take care of their facial hair as much as they take care of the hair on their heads. When you don't take care of your facial hair the skin underneath dries out, causing flaking. Dryness causes itching and irritation to the skin under your beard. You just need a combination of the right beard styling accessories along with quality beard styling products, like a beard oils or beard balms.
Beard Balms vs. Beard Oils
+ Great for beards with over 4 weeks of growth. +Great hold for styling. + Fits most places for traveling. -Melts in hot temperatures (such as traveling, left in hot car). -Easy to overuse for beginners.
How To Shape A Beard
As opposed to beard oils, beard balms will provide more hold for beard styling, taming fly-aways, and unruliness.
The essential ingredient in a balm is a wax. Beeswax is a natural ingredient that has the most hold compared to shea butter and cocoa butter, which are more for spread than hold.
The reason beard balms control facial hair so well is due to the hardening point of the wax, butter, and oil. Because the butter and oil are fast absorbing, once they're applied and cool off, the butter and wax invisibly harden around your hair, locking in moisture and providing a hold in the style you created. They do not make your beard feel hard like a hair gel would. They'll continue to do their thing regardless of whether of the outside temperature.
Otter Grooming Co. beard products select natural oils that most resemble the sebum our faces produce. These are lightweight and absorb faster into the hair shaft without leaving a residue. Plus, all the vitamins help sooth irritated skin, fight acne, and remove free radicals that cause aging.
How To Use Beard Balm
The best time to apply a beard balm is after a hot shower, when your hairs are cleanest and softest; this is when they will most easily absorb the oil.
Dry your beard completely before applying any beard balm. Water will prevent the oil from being absorbed.
Scoop out about a thumbnail size amount out of the tin.
Rub the beard balm into the palm of your hands until it is fully melted.
Massage it into your beard starting at the root of the hair follicle first and then gradually make your way to the end of your beard. Rub beard back down and hand-style.
Complete styling with abeard brush to evenly distribute the beard balm.
