Types of Mustaches

A mustache is a bold and brave style to wear even if it’s not as popular as it once was. Mustaches were hugely popular in the late 19th century – so much so that mustache curling irons were developed to help wearers achieve the perfect handlebar look.

But just like a beardsman knows the important part of growing facial hair – that choosing the right beard style for any man depends on a variety of factors, the same goes with the mustache. Sure, you may love a particular style, but the question is, “Will it look good on you?”

The answer to that question is not so easy to answer and takes a lot of things into account, from facial shape to hairstyle, and even the color of your clothes. Below, we'll look at some of the best mustache styles and the famous people that rocked them best. A mustache on the wrong face shape or paired with the wrong hairstyle can make a kickass patch of facial hair look mediocre... and we don’t like mediocrity.

Here are six popular types of mustaches to ponder. After you've considered all mustache styles, it's time to master the art of trimming your 'stache so that you can shape it just right.

The Burnside

Characteristics: A large mustache growing from both the upper lip and cheeks, whiskers from the cheeks are styled pointing upward.

Worn On: Ambrose Burnside

The Fu Manchu

Characteristics: A mustache that begins on the upper lip and whose whiskers are grown very long to extend down each side of the mouth down to the to jaw. The areas just past the corners of the mouth are shaven, thus differentiating this style from the “horseshoe”.

Worn On: Christopher Lee (Fu Manchu series)

The Handlebar

Characteristics: A handlebar mustache can be worn large or small (“petit handlebar”); it is characterized by the fact that it is bushy and must be worn long enough to curl the ends upward, which is usually achieved with styling wax.

Worn On: Anyone at a Local Natives show or anywhere in San Francisco.

The Horseshoe

Characteristics: A full mustache with vertical extensions grown on the corners of the lips and down the sides of the mouth to the jawline, resembling an upside-down horseshoe. The whiskers grown along the sides of the mouth in the horseshoe are sometimes referred to as “pipes.” Not to be confused with the “fu manchu” which is grown long from the upper lip only– the sides remain shaven in the fu manchu.

Worn On: Aggressively indifferent dads, or wrestlers

The Pencil

Characteristics: A thin, narrow, closely clipped mustache that outlines the upper lip. Pencil style mustaches can be trimmed in different manners (see below). Also sometimes called a “mouthbrow.”

Worn OnErrol Flynn, John Waters, Gomez Adams

The Toothbrush

Characteristics: This is a thick mustache, but it is only about 2.5 cm, and the hair is left in the center.

Worn On: Charlie Chaplin

The Walrus

Characteristics: A large, bushy, droopy mustache that hangs down over the lips, often entirely covering the mouth. It was extremely popular back in the 20s and 60s.

Worn On: Sam Elliot
